Book Review: Messenger by Lois Lowery

‘Cause I feel like it.

This is one of the Giver companions, and follows Matty, the best friend of Kira, after the events of Gathering Blue. Because this is a companion, not a sequel, you don’t have to have read the previous books to understand it, and I think you would like it better if you don’t.

So this story follows Matty, a boy growing up in Village, which is a place that takes in all the outcasts from other villages in this post-apocalyptic future, Matty lives with a blind man and he is eagerly awaiting the day when he will receive his name, showing his contribution to society (the man who runs Village is called Leader, the teacher is called Mentor, etc.). He learns that Village is going to stop taking in outsiders and has to go back to his old village to persuade Kira to come back before the doors close.

On it’s own, even though it’s the weakest of the three, this isn’t that bad of a story. It’s when you compare it to The Giver and Gathering Blue that the cracks really start to show, which is why I said earlier it would probably be  most enjoyed without having read the previous two.

There were a lot of little things that bugged me, like even though we return to Kira’s village we never really know what happened to it, aso, even though we see Jonas again as Leader, what happened to Gabe?

But the biggest problem was the magic. Everyone had some kind of magic, for example Matty could heal, but if Jonas and Kira had magic WHY WASN’T THIS MENTIONED BEFORE??? No one in their villages has magic, why are they special?

Weak at best on it’s own, insulting as a comparison to the previous two. Rating:3/10

I’m going to read Son, I hope it’s better than this.

I found this on Wikipedia

Dark Heart is the main antagonist of the second Care Bears movie and arguably the Care Bears’ most dangerous adversary.

Am I the only one to find this funny?

YOU WILL REBLOG THIS ON SIGHT
